Mars New Zealand is the latest Signatory to the Kai Commitment, a national programme bringing together leading food businesses from across Aotearoa New Zealand to measure and act on food waste.

Kaitlin Dawson, Executive Director of Kai Commitment, says Mars NZ’s involvement will help accelerate the progress of food waste action in New Zealand.

“We’re thrilled to have Mars NZ join the Kai Commitment. Their scale, influence and strong sustainability focus make them an important partner in helping to shift New Zealand towards a food system where food is truly valued and not wasted.”

The Kai Commitment uses the globally recognised ‘Target, Measure, Act, Collaborate’ approach, supporting businesses to set goals, track progress and take action to reduce food waste, including collaborating with others across the supply chain.

Mars NZ will join other signatories in measuring and reporting their progress, while exploring opportunities to collaborate with others on food waste action within their supply chain and wider system.

According to Shane Hammond, Market Director, Mars NZ, joining the Kai Commitment aligns with Mars’ long-standing commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing.

The Kai Commitment is already delivering strong results. Recent reporting showed participating businesses have increased food rescue volumes by 73 percent, the equivalent of almost 13 million meals, and reduced food going to landfill by three percent.

Other signatories are Woolworths NZ, Goodman Fielder, Silverfern Farms, Nestle NZ, Foodstuffs, George Weston Foods, Fonterra and AS Wilcox.
