The Ministry for the Environment (MfE), now part of the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport (MCERT), is consulting on proposed options to reduce emissions from the organic waste sector, including a range of measures to prevent and reduce food waste. Submissions on the consultation close on 12 July 2026.
Kai Commitment welcomes the inclusion of food waste prevention as a key part of the proposed approach. In particular, we support proposals for a national food waste action plan, a government–industry working group, and greater support for businesses to prevent, measure, and reduce food waste. These proposals align closely with recommendations from the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor’s 2024 food waste reports.
As a collaborative initiative, one of Kai Commitment’s goals is to support greater alignment and collective action across the food system. We have shared our submission to help inform others’ feedback and provide an opportunity for organisations across the sector to tautoko areas of shared interest and reinforce the importance of food waste prevention in future policy.
